Ah, that back to school season when the kids are out of the house and parents can get back to the important stuff. Like buying new cars. At least, that’s the conclusion you could draw from this past September, which put most — if not all — automakers in the black from a sales standpoint. Even Volkswagen, mired in its diesel scandal, eked out a 0.6% gain for the month (though October’s really going to hurt).

Per Cars.com, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles gained 13.6%, Ford saw a 23% gain, and GM landed a 12.5% surge. Excluding Volkswagen (which lost a substantial lead), GM’s figures were the lowest of the seven major automakers that do business in the U.S.
Subcompacts and compact cars — which have been on a losing streak since April, Cars.com reports — showed signs of life with a 1.1% perk. Lukewarm sales of midsize family sedans saw an 8.7% lift. A rising tide lifts all boats, it seems.
Read on to see what made the top 10 sellers of the month.

10. Toyota Corolla

Toyota’s venerable compact Corolla outperformed for September, posting sales of 26,636 for the month — up a staggering 29.7% versus the same month a year ago. This leaves the car up 7.7% for the year, at 278,742 units sold since January 1.

9. Toyota RAV4
